Art Rocks Gallery is one of the interesting attractions of Dunnville, and is located at 145, Lock Street. This gallery has a wide collection of unique paintings that are available in prints, slate or canvas. This awesome place is the brainchild of the owner Audrey O’Marra who is an artist from Cayuga. She took up painting on rocks as a pass time, and later advanced to canvas. She not only creates the artwork but also has turned into a full-fledged businesswoman managing the gallery on her own.

This gallery serves as a launching pad for several other artists from Canada. O’Marra encourages other local artists to display their work in her gallery. She focuses on supporting the businesses of local people, and hence they do her framing job. She owes her success to her family and the community at large. O’Marra now lives in a homestead, in Selkirk, with her artistically inclined husband.

O’Marra loves painting colorful abstracts. You can also find some landscapes and animals in her collection. Most of the time her work kindles the viewer’s imagination and she looks forward to their reactions. She always works in her studio with a music playing at the background. According to her, painting keeps a person emotionally balanced.

Like many other artists, Audrey O’Marra too had to see many setbacks in her life. As a child she often failed in art class. She did not like to be restricted by instructions in class, and wanted to let her imagination run wild. There was no going back after she discovered what she was passionate about.

Dating all the way back to the early 1920s artists have been combining the art of photography and painting to create canvas prints. Chen Fuli, a well known master of photography, began partnering with some of China’s finest painters to develop a new method for putting photos on canvas. Fuli’s newest exhibit has been in the works since 1979. After eleven years of preparation Fuli’s collection of photos on canvas is finally ready to be shown to the public at 789 Photo Gallery. This style of a canvas printing comes in multiple forms depending on each artists unique interpretation and personality. Some artists have used canvas printing to express ancient Chinese idioms. For example Han Meilin took a photo of the blue sky and painted a horse in the air implying free spirit. On the other hand other artists have used photos on canvas as a means for creating more ironic or humorous canvas prints. For example Hua Junwu started with a photo of an open mouthed alligator and painted a person within its jaws. Erin Martinelli of Elk Grove, California has recently found a unique way to combine her sincere admiration for her dogs and her artistic stylings into beautiful images captured on canvas prints, known as “bark art”.

Martinelli is not alone in her creative endeavors into the world of converting pictures into canvas prints. The art of photos on canvas has long been esteemed as a significant art form that merges the realism captured in the still photography with the old-world feel of painted masterpieces.

When asked about the explosion of interest in her conversion art, she stated, “When I started getting clients outside of my social network, I figured I need to start doing this a little more aggressively, because there was interest.”

Martinelli seems to have been surprised at what many in the art community have know for some time; the demand for canvas photo prints and the process of conversion art is on the rise. For many, canvas prints have become a shared art form that allows the artist to capture images that were not possible to create in an actual portrait sitting.

“Turn your head slightly this way,” she joked. “That’s really not how it works, dogs don’t normally sit still for four to five hours.”

It is with this understanding that contemporary artists render canvas prints and allow individuals with limited or no painting ability to take part in the conceptualization process.
